Ol’ T.C. could stand to lighten up a bit, but, like him, I do quite like Beetle Bailey. Sam’s Strip ran for a couple of years in the beginning of the ’60s and was written by Mort Walker and drawn by Jerry Dumas. It was a very cool, self-aware strip that, of course, failed commercially. Thank god I don’t actually have to make any money off this.
The background really does reference Krazy Kat. Nowhere near Herriman’s mastery, of course, but still. And “True Believers” is a Marvel reference — it’s how they refer to their subscribers. I got a “Hello, True Believer” from Marvel New Zealand a couple of weeks ago, asking me to renew my Astonishing X-Men subscription. I live in Sweden, the comic book is published in the US, and they’re writing from New Zealand? It’s a wild and wacky world, kids

- Mer:
- Hello there, True Believers! Welcome to my little corner of the comic strip universe: A little place we like to call Mr. Merrik's Excellent Adventures. I'm your host, Mr. Merrik, and if you'll just follow me, we'll...
-
- Mer:
- Oh, hi, Cat!
- Cat:
- What the fuck are you doing?!
-
- Mer:
- Just introducing myself to the audience.
-
- Cat:
- First of all: the strip is called Valley of the Crescent Moon [Don't ask me why]. Secondly: Don't break the fourth wall!
-
- Mer:
- Why not? I like the meta stuff.
-
- Cat:
- But it doesn't pay the bills, Mer! If we want to make any real money from this cartoon stuff, we need to stay mainstream. We want to be Beetle Bailey not Sam's Strip.
-
- Mer:
- So, no breaking the fourth wall? No self-referential humour?
-
- Cat:
- 'Fraid not, Mer. Now let's go think up some Wii puns -- you can never go wrong targeting the geek demographic. We'll have to do something about this Krazy Kat background, though; the last thing we want is a lawsuit.
